Sony Xperia S is the first smartphone launched by the company under Sony Mobile Communication brands. The phone that was launched in Las Vegas earlier this year has finally hit the Asian market as well. Priced roughly around $1600, the phone comes in two different colours – white and black. Both the colors of the phones have their own grace and charm.

Coming to hardware and styling, the first look of the phone is appealing and gives a sexy look. The translucent strip along the bottom that feature touch points like home, menu and back adds an elegant appeal to the device. However, there is a problem with navigation touch points. Located far-away from their icons in the translucent strip, these points are marked with almost invisible silver dots. Initially, you may find it problematic to handle.

Talking about display, the phone has a 4.3-inch scratch-resistant TFT capacitive touchscreen with a pixel density of 342 PPI and a resolution of 1289×720 pixels. It is said to feature Sony’s Mobile Bravia Engine that gives its display and amazing sharpness, increases contrast and saturation. Reading e-books or trying SEO surrey on this phone will be a treat.

Today, when most companies are using Android-4 based services, the Xperia S runs on Android 2.3.7 operating system. Its interface is engages its features like Timescape allows you to manage all your communication in a single interface, including Facebook, Twitter, email and text communication. A Sony product has to be rich on HD display and Playstation games and same is the case with the Xperia S.

The phone has a powerful 12.1 megapixel camera with LED flash and auto focus. It offers up to 16X digital zoom. The camera can capture high-quality images in both low light and bright light. It is also capable of recording 720p video.

There is no doubt that the phone is good and offers an array of good features. But priced at the higher end, the phone doesn’t offer anything exclusive. If budget is not a constraint, then surely Sony Xperia S will make a good buy.

Science is all well and good, but certain areas of this field really do need putting into perspective. After all, some things are far less of a burning issue than others. For example; why exactly do you think it is that our governments place so great an importance on space exploration? It may be that there are many exciting new worlds to discover out there, but we still have so many problems of our own to address. And I’m not talking about finding the cheapest central heating oil suppliers either!

Wars continue to rage all across the globe, thousands of people sleep on the streets, whilst kids in India are forced to pick around on rubbish heaps on a daily basis. So should we really be ploughing billions of pounds/dollars/yen/euros into the conquest of space right now?

Surely it would be far more sensible to tackle the issues on our own planet before trying so hard to discover life on others? Disease and famine are still major problems, even in this bright and shiny high tech age in which we live.

I’m not saying we should be pulling the plug on space exploration entirely, but we should definitely be placing a lot less importance on it. After all, what has actually been gained by of knowledge of outer space to date??? Sure, we now know there are oodles more stars and planets out there… but this hasn’t done very much to improve life on our own world, has it?

I suppose that the ultimate goal in space exploration is to finally make contact with a new form of life. Although, I’m not so sure if that is such a good idea myself… After all, we cannot even live peaceably with one another on Earth, so trying to get along with beings from a distant galaxy would be sure to end in tears.

Smartphones and the iPhone in particular have been one of the best technology breakthroughs in the last ten years. Being able to access the internet and various forms of social media at the touch of a screen icon has become so addictive that the BBC recently reported the chip designer for Smartphones have posted a record breaking pre-tax profit in the second quarter of 2011 alone. However, something bigger may be just around the corner for Apple.

Whilst every other website and newswire has been speculating about the iPhone 5 for the past few months, very few have mentioned rumours of a new type of sim card that Apple may unveil before the end of the year. At the moment Apple drop their product into a number of different networks across the globe with AT&T holding a five year exclusivity deal with the Smartphone giant. This may be all set to change soon though once the iPhone 5 is released.

A new sim card that is allegedly being worked on by European sim card manufacturer Gemalto is set to give consumers complete choice over the network carrier they wish to use with the iPhone. If this is true it means that customers could buy their iPhone by retail and then configure the device for use on a carrier of their choice – bypassing the mobile network middle man immediately. Whether or not mobile networks will be happy with this remains a moot point – as the iPhone is so popular with consumers around the world it is hard to see how they could refuse Apple anything without risking a substantial loss of business.

…Apple are beginning to listen to previous criticism and show willingness to give consumers what they want…

The deal with AT&T could be a short term buffer to Apple’s plans if the rumours prove true, but with the deal only locked in for another few years, grumbling consumers may not have to wait long for Apple to finally give them what they’ve wanted from the start by default – a choice of network. At the moment the best worldwide sim card remains the property of companies like abroadband and others who offer access to the internet from around the world at superior prices and in many cases, superior speeds then Apple currently do. However it is refreshing, even by way of rumour, to see that Apple is listening to the consumer.

There was a lot of outrage present when the iPhone 4 was released with a deliberately different sized sim card making it difficult to change networks because of Apple’s exclusivity deal. Whilst there have since been ways to circumvent this, Apple have realised that to compete effectively and maintain customer loyalty, they need to listen and respond to what the consumer wants.

It will only be a few more months before Apple lovers find out whether or not the rumours are true.

You switch on the TV and you’re about to turn it over onto that game-show you like to watch when something catches your eye. It’s a man, being interviewed by a newsreader. He’s had the lower half of his body blown off yet he is still here to tell the tale. You pause and watch it, and, as the camera spans down to show his new lower body – two legs, formed into passable leg shapes and supporting him enough that he can balance on them alone – you realise that actually, we’ve come a very long way in terms of making people mobile.

The truth of the matter is that 50 years ago, if the same man had survived, he’d have been done for. The technology back then just wasn’t capable of looking after people in that precarious situation. Nowadays it’s a very different story; every single day, lives are being saved and people are getting their lives back. They may never be the same again, but this new lease of life at least allows them to go on.

Another area which has made impressive leaps and bounds – another similar area, that is – has to be that of joints. Years ago a hip replacement was considered highly dangerous and much too risky. Now? It’s become as commonplace and routine as a trip to the supermarket, with millions of people now in and out in record time.

Materials have changed in this field too. Where metal has been the vogue – and in some countries still is – bearings now utilize plastic, making movement far more fluid and comfortable. But most importantly of all, unlike the metal ball-sockets, the plastic doesn’t splinter (something which can cause complications in any patient, however healthy). And don’t take my word for it; if you want to see a hip-replacement you need only go online. Someone with a Looe webcam has probably filmed it, and watching the footage will give you insight into something that is actually quite fascinating.

Read that title again, then Google “fight to cure Cancer” and see what you come up with. I think you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised.

The facts are this: Cancer is still killing people. It is still the same disease – or worse, in many cases, as it mutates and finds new ways to invade – that it ever was. But at the same time, there is hope: some Cancer’s are becoming easier to treat, thanks to the constant unstoppable forces of science and technology. We’re a very long way from being able to eradicate Cancer and call it a distant memory, but with health services now more on the ball than ever about this, more people are surviving Cancer and that has to be a remarkable thing!

Another thing to remember is that in worldly terms we’ve not been around long, us human beings. So the fact that women who once had Cancer are now out buying a beautiful wedding ring or sunning themselves on holiday is something to rejoice about.

And we haven’t even started on the drugs. In just ten years, Cancer drugs have made miraculous leaps and bounds forwards, thanks to large cash injections which have allowed scientists to dedicate their work to this important task. This is all without even mentioning the “Race for Life” events that have been happening all over the UK for some time now. These races alone generate a massive amount of awareness about a topic which was once mysterious.

Well watch out mysterious Cancer, we’re on to you and we’re beating it!

I was using duplication software to back some files I had on my computer’s hard drive and surfing the web as this was being done when I stumbled upon a news release about a new scientific breakthrough. This breakthrough was the development of an oral HIV rapid test that was non invasive.

This at home oral HIV test was developed by the people over at Orawell USA and is the first of its kind. The makers have indicated that tests have shown that reliable results can be delivered within ten minutes.

Now this is great news for anyone who wants to know what their HIV status is and do not want to have to wait days or weeks to get the results of their test. This new oral HIV rapid test also eliminates the need and inconvenience of going to the clinic or doctor’s office to have the test done. No blood is drawn to do this test and you can be assured that the results will be confidential.

Many doctors have recommended and have approved the OraWell Oral HIV Rapid Test 1and 2. The results have been shown to be 99.98% accurate. It is easy for users to collect their own saliva specimen as the test comes with additions supplies for this to be done. All users have to do is to place the saliva sample unto the enclosed panel for the analysis to be done. This new test works by detecting in the saliva the antibodies to HIV-1 and 2.

A simple negative or positive response will then be shown. If the band on the panel shown pink it is a positive test, no pink band means a negative test.

If you need IT support London, restaurants or the address of a good hairdresser in Edinburgh where would you look? The Yellow Pages, perhaps? Maybe check out a quick Google search? Or would you look on a social networking site?
Turns out more and more businesses are starting to turn to Twitter and Facebook to promote their companies or products – what’s even more bizarre is how successful this is proving as a marketing method! I bet a lot of the execs at these companies would have pooh-poohed the idea of using a teenage fad to advertise their services. Yet now you can even get jobs as social networking experts. How great a job does that sound? I imagine Social Networking Professionals (to give them their proper title) sitting in their office with endless cans of Red Bull, listening to rock music on their headphones with their trainers up on the desk, while all the real workers crowd outside the door talking in hushed tones about their amazing and magical abilities to reach out to the youth audience.
Maybe I’m just jealous. After all, Twitter and Facebook are banned in my office, as they are in most workplaces around the country. How cool would it be if they weren’t just un-banned, but if you were positively encouraged to use them? If you would be reprimanded, in fact, for not using them? Maybe I should mention this as a possible new advertising tactic at our next sales meeting. I could even volunteer to set up a couple of accounts for the company… Probably the only way I’ll get near Facebook while I’m sitting at my desk!

When the Large Hadron Collider came on the scene a few years ago, I have to admit that although that thing baffled me half to death, I was intrigued by what it had been designed to do: create loads of miniature explosions akin to The Big Bang. Wowzers! I thought, that sounds ace!

Then someone mentioned that, hmm, maybe it might open up loads of miniature black holes which would soon join forces and consume our whole planet: people, animals, everything – even light itself. I wasn’t so mad on it after that.

Basically, if you haven’t got a clue what I’m on about then join the club: neither do I. In layman’s terms, this device – which really should have been called The Massive Great Large Hadron Collider as it is miles round in size and like a country in its own right – is being used, as we speak, to generate answers to the most allegedly important questions. While that’s cool and everything, I can’t help but wish they’d invested that money in a tin-opening advice that allows you to open your mackerel fillets without flicking fishy tomatoey sauce all over your face. But still, to each his own.

The point is that after a couple of years we’re still here. The world was not sucked into the black hole of doom, they have made progress, and facts have been found out. My one remaining quibble is that all this cost about a billion pounds. Call me cynical but for that money I wish they’d have built the thing where I could see it and point and say “look at that immense impressive thing!”

By the way, “All It’s Cracked Up To Be?”was probably the wrong title for this article…Gary from the local red diesel suppliers says that if that happened and it was cracked up then we’d all be gone in a flash…

Don’t let the cinemas fool you with all their new Digital advertising. I recently learned that a major UK chain has been deliberately misleading it’s customers on how much resolution their new Digital projectors actually have. This seems to be a common attitude amongst exhibitors. The posters say one thing, but the reality is much less then perfect.

Digital projection has been on the cards for quite a few years now but it is really since the advent of the new wave of 3D that both film makers and distributors have started taking the technology seriously. Whilst you’ll still get stalwarts such as Mike Leigh remaining sceptical over the benefits of Digital, others such as James Cameron can’t harp on enough over how fantastic the format is allowing 3D and clarity of a depth never seen before.

Having seen many films in Digital I have to say that the hype is certainly justified in many cases. 3D on the other hand needs to do a bit more to convince me though as many films in 3D have been poorly shot or converted. In the cinema you may not see the image as the film maker originally intended though simply because the technology they have invested in isn’t the best on the market. Cinema is all about cost efficiency now which is partially understandable. That said if movie goers are to enjoy the next ‘Avatar’or ‘Batman’film to the depth the film makers intended, they may have to wait a while until exhibitors are willing to cough up the cash for the best projectors and servers. As it stands now a Mac Antivirus may be required to clean up a lot of the software currently being run in the major UK chains which is cause for concern in the future of cinema.

Hybrid cars are the latest and greatest achievement of the automobile industry. Those who designed the hybrid vehicle discovered a way to combine the power of a gasoline engine with the efficiency and renewability of an electric motor. Hybrid cars that do not utilize the power of an electric motor or battery are not as fuel efficient as some of the more advanced vehicles on the market.

The hybrid engine is one of the most ground breaking inventions of recent history. The hybrid engine is the reason that hybrid cars get such fantastic gas mileage, as well as the reason why hybrids have such lower greenhouse gas emissions than gasoline engine vehicles. The only real downside of a hybrid vehicle is that, as of today, they are much more costly to manufacture—because of their high levels of sophistication and technology.

In addition to a higher initial price, most hybrids have some kind of electrical component. The electric battery on these types of hybrids requires replacement about once every five to six years. The cost of this replacement is very similar to having your transmission rebuilt, every six years. For this reason many people decide that a hybrid is not worth the investment, especially in these tough economic times.

Hybrid cars function differently depending on current driving conditions. In the city, where speed limits are usually less than thirty miles per hour, hybrid vehicles run solely on electrical power stored up in their battery. This battery is usually charged from an outlet and/or when you apply the brakes. Newer hybrid models gather electrical energy from friction when you brake. When driving over thirty miles per hour hybrids switch to their gasoline engines, which usually get between forty and sixty miles per gallon of fuel.
